Professional Shrub Pruning and Trimming
Well-manicured landscapes are an excellent addition to any property. Bloom understands the importance of maintaining healthy-looking landscapes and alternatively, when landscapes go unattended, the curb appeal and overall health of the plants can suffer. The Northern VA growing zone offers a plethora of options when it comes to shrubs, everything from deciduous flowering varieties to evergreen varieties which keep their foliage through our winter season. Knowing what types of shrubs, you have is helpful, as each variety requires pruning at specific times during our growing season. Here at Bloom, we are here to help you identify what you have, if you don’t already know, as well as set up a trimming program tailored to your unique landscape.Types of Shrub Trimming
At Bloom, because we are gardeners, we understand that not every shrub can or should be pruned and shaped with hedge trimmers. Depending on your landscape as well as your preferences, we also do our fair share of hand pruning, allowing shrubs to maintain a more natural look. Many homeowners prefer hand pruning for the ever-popular Azalea bush that grows so well in our region. Of the many varieties of shrubs in our area, as gardeners, we get the most questions related to Roses and Hydrangea care, specifically as it relates to pruning.- Roses »
– At Bloom, we understand these can be tricky bushes to deal with & you will want to know what variety you are working with. The best time to prune roses is typically in late winter or early spring, after the last frost has occurred and right around the time when new growth begins. We carefully start by examining each rose bush, removing any dead or diseased wood, cutting as close to the base of the plant as possible. Any crossing branches will also need to be removed keeping the goal in mind of creating upward reaching branches in a “vase-like” shape. We always strive to prune to outward facing buds on an angle using clean, disinfected, sharp hand pruners. Lastly, unrelated to pruning, roses are big feeders and will require ample amounts of fertilizer for the best, robust blooms. Combine Bloom’s pruning & fertilization program for optimal results.
- Hydrangeas »
– We have seen countless times when homeowners accidentally prune off next seasons buds winding up with a bloomless hydrangea for the season. At Bloom Gardening, we are here to educate you and assist if you’d like us to handle all the hard work pruning for you. We understand, there are numerous varieties of hydrangeas on the market and different varieties have different pruning requirements. We can help you determine if your hydrangea blooms on old or new wood, or if you have a variety that blooms on both. As a general rule, hydrangeas that bloom on old wood require less pruning and bloom earlier in the season than new wood bloomers. However, if you do want to re-shape or scale down the size of this type of hydrangea, the time to do so is at the height of the summer, right after the plant has finished blooming prior to it forming any new buds for next season. Alternatively, hydrangeas blooming on new wood can and should be cut back aggressively each season, ideally late winter or early spring before they’ve begun growing. Our recommendation for homeowners who are new to gardening or are unsure of what variety of hydrangea they have is - the best approach to pruning your hydrangeas is to prune nothing at all. This will ensure your hydrangea will produce blooms for its next season!
